Educating the Community

Why Community Education is Important to Your Project

As the saying goes, "it takes a village." Building community support and involvement may indeed be the tipping point towards the success of your venture. A robust community organizing toolkit includes information such as:
  • The basics of natural burial
  • Local zoning and other land use regulations related to your site (e.g. is it already a cemetery or have potential for special use permitting to allow burials? What about compliance with Environmental Protection standards?)
  • The geographic and environmental location of your proposed site (e.g. farmland adjacent to urban boundary, existing cemetery within a populated area, etc.)
  • A clear sense of local leadership--in local governance, service groups, community associations, etc.
  • Obvious allies and potential nay-sayers directly or peripherally associated with your proposed location
  • Knowledge of basic talking points that address commonly held concerns about natural burial best practices
  • Other obvious issues that are likely to come up in the Q&A following a presentation

When is a good time to start building community education and engagement tools? The sooner the better!
